Appointments — Antenatal
All appointment times will be agreed in advance and scheduled to suit you. That means that I can see you during office hours, or in the evening if you prefer it, or at weekends. I aim to take as much time as is needed at each appointment, so that you do not feel in any way rushed, and have ample opportunity to discuss and question.
At our initial meeting I will explain in more detail what independent midwifery is about, and listen to your hopes and plans for this pregnancy. It is very important that we feel comfortable with each other, and feel we can build a trusting and honest relationship. This appointment gives us a chance to meet and discuss.... to put a "toe in the water" without commitment.
If you decide to go ahead and book with me, our next appointment will be a booking appointment, and will take around two hours. I would prefer your partner to be with you for this appointment. During it I will ask about your medical and obstetric history so that we can plan appropriate care for you. I will also give you information about the various screening tests that are available for you and your baby. Towards the end of the appointment I shall measure your blood pressure and test your urine, and may be able to listen to the baby's heartbeat if you're far enough along in your pregnancy.

From this first appointment we will plan together the appointments for the rest of your pregnancy. At subsequent appointments I will take your blood pressure, test your urine, and examine you to make sure that the pregnancy is progressing well.
There will always be plenty of time at these appointments for you to ask questions and to discuss any issues that arise. During your pregnancy I will see you for antenatal appointments at least as often as is recommended in the current NICE guidelines, probably more. Later on in your pregnancy we will make plans and prepare for your labour and birth. Antenatal equipment

If you are having a home birth I will bring a box or two of equipment to your home when you are around 36 weeks pregnant. This will stay with you ready for the big day.
